The candidate will input data from online databases of nineteenth century newspapers and then from photographed archives of company records.
The research assistant will work with the academic to understand the background of the research and the data needed from these records. The relevant information will then be inputted into a Microsoft form provided by the academic, to allow for later analysis in an Access database. No knowledge of Access is required as the candidate will just be using a specially created form to input the data.
The right candidate will be good attention to detail, self motivation to complete tasks remotely and an interest in history, though no knowledge or expertise in the nineteenth or twentieth century is required. There will be regular catch ups with the academic involved and opportunities to discuss personal and academic development.
Key Tasks
1. Inputting data from nineteenth century newspapers
- Using a set search term the candidate will methodically look through approximately 1300 historical newspaper articles on the Gale Nineteenth Century Newspapers database.
- Articles will be checked for the relevant criteria and inputted accurately into the Access form.
- The candidate should be aware of potential repetition between articles and record any anomalies for the academic to check.
2. Inputting data from photographs of archives
- Methodologically work through photographed documents taken from relevant archives and shared through OneDrive.
- Accurately input data to the Access form with a strong attention to detail - Highlight any anomalies or any information or data the candidate is unsure about to the academic

- MA or MSc in any subject and/or possibly working towards this.

Job Requirements:
· Excellent ICT skills and the ability to be self-sufficient in terms of administration
· Regular catch ups that can be conducted remotely or in person
Other Information:
Pay Rate: £ 13.32 per hour
Working Hours: 220 hours in total over 12 months eg approx 4 hours a week.
Length of Contract: 12 months, though it is expected work will take place between January and May and then September and December
Start Date: January 2025
